Satellites

Satellites are tournaments in which the prizes are not monetary but are tickets to other tournaments. These are usually freeroll or a fraction of the prize of the tournament for which players can qualify.

Example: Countdown to Texas Hold'em Main Event 10K is a satellite tournament (freeroll) where the top 3 players qualify for the Main Event and winning the satellite is the only way to join the tournament.
